A career as a generator technician allows you freedom and independence, the ability to be out on the road, and a place to use your mechanical and electrical skills. I also like working at cool locations like Fire Stations – it brings out the kid in me.

How long have you been a generator technician?

I will celebrate 3 years as a generator technician this August.

What do you love most about your job?

I get to work on big diesel engines and I enjoy that my role works independently. I get to work at my own pace and travel New England every day. The scenery always changes and there is always something new to see.

What advice would you give someone considering a career as a generator technician?

As a generator technician, you get to travel, see new sites, and meet new people. My advice is to be friendly and outgoing, and always measure twice, cut once!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, I want to share a cool story that highlights why I enjoy my job as a generator technician. I was called out on a service call to a residence during a Nor’Easter. When I arrived, the homeowner had 3 feet of water in her basement. The sump pumps were inoperable because her generator was out of service. The generator needed a new voltage regulator and I, unfortunately, did not have one on my truck. As I notified her I would pick one up at the shop and return, she told me to wait a moment. She went inside the home and returned to me with a voltage regulator she happened to have purchased when the generator was installed. I replaced the faulty regulator with the new one and within 30 minutes, the water receded by 1 foot. She was extremely grateful and I was proud to have helped someone in need. This is one of many reasons I enjoy my job!
