Home Generator Preventative Maintenance Checklist

When your generator technician comes to visit, here’s what he or she will do under a maintenance plan:

  • Replace your spark plugs annually.
  • Change your engine lubrication oil & oil filter annually.
  • Replace your air filter.
  • Check your battery charging system, alternator, starter, and governor.
  • Check the entire unit for fuel and oil leakage.
  • Conduct battery service (add water, clean posts, and replace corrosion inhibiting pads if necessary).
  • Remove all carbon and dust deposits from the generator.
  • Run your generator and conduct a safety shutdown check (check voltage, frequency, instruments and adjust carburetor and governor).
  • Test your automatic transfer switch.
  • Write up a report and advise the owner if any additional parts/labor might be required.
