Why add Battery Back-Up?

Whether your home has solar panels installed or not, a back-up battery system is a good option for your home.

Your battery system:

  • Charges when electricity is cheapest, & you use that power when electricity costs are the highest.
  • Powers your home in power outages
  • Switches your home from utility power to battery power in 4 milliseconds, ensuring there is no loss of power even for a second, unlike a gas powered generator. Protects sensitive medical equipment & electronics from damage in an outage.
  • Batteries are essential in Time-of-Use utility Billing plans.

What is Time of Use Utility Billing?

Time of Use or TOU is widely used in Western states such as California & Arizona. It is becoming more common in other areas, & will be nationwide with 1-4 years.

TOU simplified:

  • During Peak Usage times I.e. when people are home and using the most electricity, this high usage stresses the utility infrastructure & causes issues for the utility company. Brownouts are a common side effect of peak demand issues.

  • This peak is usually around 3-8pm, & in TOU utilities, the cost for your electricity can be as much as 2-3x higher than normal.

  • Having a battery protects you from Time of Use billing by powering your home in these expensive peak demand times so you aren’t pulling power from the utility infrastructure.
  • Some utilities will compensate you for discharging extra battery power back into the grid during peak times, as you are helping to reinforce & supply the utility locally so they don’t need to move power within the grid to meet demand.
